With a population of around 116 million and an average age of just 24, The Philippines is one of the youngest societies in South-East Asia. As the domestic labour market in industry and agriculture is limited, labour migration has a long tradition. Remittances from the millions of Filipinos working around the world account for around ten per cent of the country’s total economic output.
The success story of care and healthcare
The partnership with Germany is particularly close in the healthcare sector. Since 2016, there have been established structures and programmes through which around 2,000 Filipino care workers come to Germany each year. This makes a significant contribution to relieving the burden on the German healthcare system.
New opportunities in other sectors
In addition to care, the focus is increasingly shifting to other professions for which Filipino professionals are particularly well-suited due to their high standard of training and international experience:
- IT & Technology: Experienced software developers and engineers
- Hospitality: Service-oriented staff for tourism and the hotel industry
- Education & Trade: Teaching professionals and skilled workers from the commercial sector
