With a population of over 287 million and a very young demographic – almost half of whom are under 30 – two million people enter the labour market in Indonesia every year. As youth unemployment is high, interest in training and employment opportunities abroad is growing steadily.
Strong educational tradition and language skills
Germany is one of the most important destinations in Europe for Indonesian students seeking employment, particularly in technical and scientific subjects. A major advantage for integration is the enormous interest in the German language: around 150,000 people in Indonesia are currently learning German.
Targeted cooperation
The potential for the German labour market is particularly high in the healthcare sector, the catering industry and the skilled trades. The German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Indonesia) promotes training to German standards locally. In addition, government agreements are already in place to specifically place hospital staff in Germany and establish long-term partnerships for skilled professionals.
Expansion of dual vocational training
A milestone in this cooperation is the partnership between AHK Indonesia and ASTRAtech. Since June 2025, dual vocational training based on the German model has been significantly expanded. The aim is to enable Indonesian students to obtain internationally recognised qualifications and prepare them directly for the international labour market.
